meet the creator
I am Carin, a single mama to a little free spirit named Quilla. For the last 28 years I have traveled, lived and worked all over this country with our public lands. From the coasts of Alaska to the mountains of Appalachia and the desert Southwest in between, I am blessed to have been able to live in the places people go to vacation. I have been plotting my transformation for a while, and with this website I am taking the leap from public service, manifesting my own metamorphosis into gracious entrepreneur and writer. My hope is that the visions I create speak to your heart and touch a bit of your wild soul.
I am a strong and independent Aries who like to think outside the box and solve problems. I am spontaneous and love to laugh! I enjoy walking dogs with my daughter, cooking, camping, gardening and being anywhere near the ocean. Drinking my morning expresso in my Happi Coat as I watch the sun rise is the best part of my day! Swimming in the sea and being around horses are my favorite things to do! Integrity and authenticity are two traits I hold dear. I am excited to travel more abroad and perhaps live there a spell in this next chapter. I am obsessed with ancestry and myth and have loved diving into the indigenous roots of where my bones and blood originated. I believe the diaspora that I have felt my whole life, not belonging to one place or another, has manifested in a nomadic gypsy lifestyle. In my work with the federal government I have strived to be an ally to the indigenous communities that surround our public lands. Their diverse cultures and ties to this land have inspired my ancestral work and longing for my motherland (Scandinavian /Nordic/Viking decent). I hope you enjoy this little piece of me that I have started to create…..a place of stability and freedom where my dreams will become realized!

The Creation sTory
In 2017 I went from Alaska where I was the Chief Ranger at Lake Clark National Park to the farmlands of West Virginia to become the Chief Ranger of the famous Appalachian Trail. While renting a farmhouse, I wanted to cover the old couch and make curtains….I stumbled across Kantha fabric and placed a bulk order of 10 pieces. When I received them, I was blown away by the artistry, diverse patterns and brilliant colors. Kantha (meaning: “patched cloth”) refers to the tradition of producing these unique, vintage saris quilted blankets and the craft/stitch itself, a small, straight running stitch. It originated from Bengali housewives mending old clothes by taking out a strand of thread from the colorful border of their saris and making simple designs with them. The weight varies as does the condition of each sari...... but traditionally all are made of 3 layers of fabric.
I covered my furniture and hung them in my windows and then made a throw blanket with one. My mom came to stay with us a bit and one day offered up the idea to make a coat. She grew up in Okinawa for several years as a child and remembered a kimono style pattern that was simple to make, equally divided into 3rds, from the Japanese Culture called a Happi Coat 法被.
She started to cut the pattern and I asked if we could trim the jacket with blanket faux fur to give it a little sas/style. Even though I have been a park ranger my whole adult life, I have always loved the arts, interior design, and fashion. We prototyped one for me and a matching coat for my then 3-year-old daughter Quilla. We wore them on the farm and made a few for friends and family. The blankets were also a hit and we started making them as gifts or on special requests through word of mouth.
